How did we get here?
Can you explain the answer and check where the information came from? Ask for sources, then open them and check they support the result.
A guide by James Wilson
Getting useful results from AI takes two things: knowing the work and knowing how to use the tools.
Choose the starting point that feels closest to you. Each one suggests something you could try next.
Your starting point
Know the work well
Skilled with AI
You combine knowledge of the work with the ability to use AI well. You can direct it, challenge its output and decide when your own approach is better.
Find the tasks where AI saves you time or improves the result. Share what works with your team and keep checking the output.
Knowledge of the work Your knowledge, experience and judgement in this activity. Can you recognise good work and spot mistakes?
Skill with AI How well you can explain what you need, work with the results and recognise when AI is not helping.
Think about one task
You might know your accounts inside out but be new to building a website. Your starting point with AI will be different for each task.
Think about something you want to do, then use this guide to choose a next step. You can learn more about the work and get better at using AI along the way.
Before you use the result
AI can produce a convincing answer that is wrong. These questions help you check a report, proposal or other piece of work before relying on it.
Can you explain the answer and check where the information came from? Ask for sources, then open them and check they support the result.
Look for missing information, guesses and mistakes. Check names, dates and figures against information you trust.
For work with serious consequences, involve someone who knows the subject. If you cannot judge whether the result is right, get help before using it.
These questions are useful whether you are reviewing your own work or choosing someone to help you.
